I discovered this sanctuary on my way home from work one day. It’s literally in the middle of Harajuku but manages to keep away from the chaos. The friendly koi fish, the gentle cherry blossom trees, the playful flickering shadows on the gateway... it transports me to transparency. I take a moment to be present and practice mindfulness.

When I find myself in Tokyo, I choose to be less social and invest more time at the office or at home. Climbing up to my rooftop and studying the complex simplicity of the city view - I naturally find myself pondering life’s big questions.
I've grown up with art in the household but it’s only in recent years that I personally began to collect and advise. It’s exciting to become friends with emerging artists and to witness their careers unfold.

Having spent my childhood abroad, attended an international school in Tokyo and now juggling a bi-continental life - I don’t blend in with the homogenous population in terms of Japanese mentality, attitude, or experience. Yet, Tokyo will always be home - a personal place of comfort and pride. This city’s perceptibility has nurtured my multifaceted spirit. Its humility has taught me to always count my blessings. Having been based here for close to 20 years straight- I'm grateful to this city for transforming me by grounding me.

Don’t let the grungy eccentric vibes mislead you- the fresh seafood and simple vegetable dishes are top quality. The nostalgic energy is an added plus to a fuss-free dinner. You can find countless refined dining experiences in Tokyo but Narukiyo is one of a kind. This izakaya has become a trendy destination to an international crowd, but I’ve been a regular for over a decade now. It's comforting to know some things don't change.
