Ask for the 2nd floor for the wall of art books and a rotation of artwork on display. An egg sandwich (which has its own history here), “milksēki” (a Japanese Taisho-era egg-based version of a milkshake) or rice bowl will send you back to the age the place was established.

There are few comparable models of this scale in Japan: four floors of former classrooms filled with galleries, creative offices, workshops, a café, the original gymnasium, and rooftop garden allotments. Yet the star of the street for me is Flower Bar Gardena: a flower shop and night bar, it’s everything I love about Shimokitazawa, home of the dreamy entrepreneur.
