My name is Jesse freeman. I’m originally from Baltimore, MD USA, and I’ve been living in Tokyo for the past nine years. I’m a photographer, filmmaker, and certified master level ikebana artist and frequently exhibit my work in Japan, Australia, and Sweden. All of this is included in my other work as the creative director for Muro Scents, a Swedish scent company.

TOTEM POLE PHOTO GALLERY
An artist-run photography gallery in Shinjuku. It exhibits the work of its members, all amateur photographers with day jobs. One thing about non-commercial galleries like this is that they rent their spaces out to other artists, and Totem Pole is one of nearly a dozen other similar small photo galleries that stretch from Shinjuku to Yotsuya.

SHOWA KINEN PARK
This park used to be a US air force base that served the Korean War. There is a pay-entry area of the park that has Japanese gardens, a water park, frisbee golf, ponds, cherry blossoms etc...but also a general area with a gallery space and open field where they hold events on the weekends. I do annual bamboo installations there through my Sogetsu ikebana school and love to take my dogs there.

Tokyo to me is simply freedom. I think to an extent when living in a foreign country one is seeking a contrast…a change. Tokyo perhaps is the most extreme of this and as a result the most exciting. There is always something to do! Yet it can go either way. I find for myself, I have my own little bubble here, free of the trifles of home.

SO BOOKS
The owner is a big supporter of the Shinjuku artist-run gallery scene. He curates the store and if you ask the right questions, every visit becomes a lesson in not only photography but jazz, fashion, architecture, painting, history, and theory.
