AYANO SUDO
ARTIST / PHOTOGRAPHER

I work as an artist and editorial photographer. The subject of my work is the desire to transform oneself, surpassing one’s granted gender. I photograph myself and other models in various locations and countries, and also in my studio in Japan; the settings and the processes that undertake the transformations go beyond given nationality, sexuality, or time-period.

KOMIYAMA SHOTEN
The best old art book shop ever! As an artist, I love getting lost in books and magazines. This store has many excellent sources of material for me to look at for inspiration. Expanding my personal library at home is one of my favorite hobbies, so when it's time to add to my bookshelf, I take a trip to Komiyama Shoten. While I am in the neighborhood of Jimbocho, I take a little stroll and visit the other bookstores in the area.

SHINOHARA ENGEIJO
A lovely casual kabuki theater. The style of this building is timeworn and unique. Most notably the magnificent interior. The members of the audience sit on the tatami floor with zabuton cushion. The actor groups are always comprised of real families. Their costumes and wigs are a mix of traditional kimono and Western drag-style. They dance to the beat of Enka songs and contemporary J-POP.

It reminds me of a place I would find in a William Gibson novel. Every town in Tokyo has its own particular world and unique culture. It has the the atmosphere of parallel worlds. When I go to Daikanyama, it feels like I am in West Hollywood in L.A., or when I walk through the streets of Ginza, I am instantly transported to 5th Avenue in N.Y.

HIGURASHI GALLERY
Kuniyoshi Kaneko's Atelier (not open to the public but such a beautiful place). Kaneko was a painter, well-known for his illustrations of the Japanese edition of Alice in Wonderland and Tatsuhiko Shibusawa's novel. Several people have told me, “Your face looks like a Kaneko girl.” Since then, I had wanted to see him and visit his atelier. But my dream never came true. He passed away in 2015.
